The Swansea Art Society is one of the oldest Art Societies in the world and this year we are celebrating 125 continuous years of creating art, i.e. 1886-2011.
Our organisation is a registered U.K. Charity, with a dedicated focus to 'promote and further the education of the public in arts and crafts.'
We are based in the University City of Swansea, South Wales, United Kingdom.
Our lovely seaside city has many claims to fame, but Swansea is often historically recognised for the export of copper in Victorian times, for which it gained the nickname Copperopolis and for being the childhood haunt of the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas.
As a long established Art Society, we have a mix of amateur and professional artist members, who produce artworks in a wide range of media and genre.
The Society stages two major art exhibitions every year.
We meet weekly for practical Painting For Pleasure sessions on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings throughout the year. We also have an active Portraiture group, who sketch/paint live models regularly on Tuesday afternoons, during school term times.
Our Winter Programme consists of a series of monthly demonstrations by live artists or by watching and discussing professionally produced DVDs.
During the summer months we schedule a programme of Outdoor Sketching and we are literally spoilt for choice in Swansea, as within a short distance we can easily access a wide range of suitable locations, e.g. the quality parks and sights of the city (with its Marina development and busy harbour), lovely seaside locations throughout the Gower peninsula (the first area designated as of outstanding beauty) , countryside galore, with mountains and castles added to the mix!
Our aim in producing and maintaining this website is not only to celebrate the artistic talents to be found everywhere amongst our thriving membership, but also to portray the human side of the society, as the members follow their respective creative journeys - you can view their progress through our photo albums and members' blog.
