Congratulations to Dr. Alan Marriott, who won the Irene Bache Cup for the best members' painting entered at this year's AGM.
Alan is pictured here being presented with the cup by our President, Miss Eileen Campbell Jones.
The winning painting, a lovely watercolour depiction of a seascape with boats had been delicately executed by Alan. It was voted top painting in the final head-to-head vote against an atmospheric river scene in acrylic medium, by Mrs. Lilian Hopkins, which was voted runner-up.
Today's 'Handing In' went smoothly, with 73 framed artworks making up this year's Winter Exhibition at St. Mary's Church, Swansea.

The exhibition will be officially opened tomorrow (22nd November) at 2pm by the new Vicar of St Mary's, the Revd. Simon Griffiths and will continue until Thursday December 1st (excluding Sundays).
The event celebrated the exact day 125 years ago when the Swansea Art Society was founded. This article about the Victorian-themed event last Saturday appeared in the South Wales Evening Post on Tuesday 24th May (reprinted courtesy of the newspaper).
Several more events are planned in this year's outdoor sketching programme - we hope that all members will do what they can to support the society's efforts to collectively congratulate ourselves after 125 creative years and spread the word to new prospective artist members.

The first event of this year's Outdoor Sketching Programme took place last Saturday in the grounds of St. Mary's Church.
To commemorate the society's 125th anniversary, members turned up in Victorian costume (or their variant of it, anyway) and painted from easels.
Lots of passers by expressed interest and we all had a lively time - thankfully the rain stayed away.

The prestigious Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2010 is almost upon us.

The paintings (together with the entry forms) can be delivered to London's Mall Gallery from various pick up points around the U.K., e.g. in Cardiff on July 1st and the winning entries will be displayed at the Mall Gallery from the 1st to the 7th of November, 2010.
The Vicar of St. Mary’s, the Rev. Andrew Vessey, who is also a society member has written to us to say…. “I am sorry to say that a Summer Exhibition is not possible this year in St Mary's. We have been overtaken by the urgency of [repair] work, which involves a complete re-wiring and the provision of new facilities. We either have the work done or we are closed by higher authorities, so we have no option…. It has brought a huge number of headaches with respect to regular letting and civic services etc. but even more sadly, with my retirement in August, it looks as if I shall not have the pleasure of welcoming you in the late Autumn either [for your Winter exhibition]….”
Andrew Vessey has been a great friend to the society over recent years and we wish him well in his retirement from St. Mary’s and in his planned move to a new home away from Swansea.
However, the society’s Summer Exhibition is not cancelled, merely postponed, as after some frantic phone calls we have managed to secure the Swansea Grand Theatre Arts Wing to stage our exhibition in early August.
